Readership= the total number of people who read a publication.
Circulation= the number of newspapers copies that are distributed to newsagent and newsstands on an average day.
The Observer newspaper target a predominantly male audience (sports section is predominantly male and in the middle tot he back). Hard news mixed with opinions are at the front to attract the news hungry audience. They also attract a cultural audience as there is a culture section. The Observer Magazine targets women as its stuff of gardening, fashion, cooking and sex advice.
A Guardian/Observer reader can be of any gender, in any class and from any location yet they have to have a good attitude to learning and taking action.

On the Observer home page the use of the different tabs available, such a culture, which would appeal to its target audience of cultural people, using mise-en-scene as it is up on the page which highlights its importance. As the Observer is a liberal newspaper they are highly diverse and appeal culturally to their audience thus a culture section on the home page appeals to them.
Also, the articles on the lifestyle section would appeal to female who typically read that section as the text is pink which connotes love and links to women so they would feel connected to that page as they would typically be used to seeing those colours.
