LANGUAGE AND REPRESENATION



The newspaper change its format on the 15th January 2018. It was previous known as the Berliner size (smaller than a broadsheet, bigger than a tabloid) and then re-launched to a tabloid ( but this was in terms of size than style)

Typography: Sans Serif font with rounded ends and in black. This is a simple font and bold. This fit in with the newspaper being liberal and for ‘progressives’.
Formal and serious, which was associated with ‘quality’ newspapers.
Mixture of bold and non bold fonts throughout to connote a combination of tradition and modernity.
Body copy was written in a serif font, making it easy to read and traditional for newspapers.

Colour: House colour linked to the brand -à Grey-blue.
Different colours branded different sections.

Images: Uses full colour photography, which brings variety and visual interest. Most images are of politicians, celebrities and ordinary people. Some are close ups, most are mid or long shots to connote a news orientation.
Use of Language: Headlines are written in a journalistic style (newsy), but are formal. Skyboxes informal tone, more personal and helpful.
Values: Liberal values: tolerance, fairness and progress through media language, which makes it mainstream.
It’s designed to connote that the newspaper is packed full of news, which celebrates the value of information.


























-Layout: a lot of text yet the photo is extremely strong to emphasise to the reader what is going to be
talked about, symmetrical so its easy to read, ordered as its formal (Z technique). 
-Typography: bold heading to attract a pogressive modern audience, Serif fonts which is elegant. 
Sky box is big with bright colours and the same font to attract the readers. Easy to read.
-Language-use: formal to appeal to an ABC1 reader, direct address which makes the reader feel 
apart of the conversation.
-Images: Links to power story, singular shot, at the top the images shows equality which reflects the 
Scotts Trust values, advertising rich chefs and fancy recipes which links to the reader (her facial 
expressions smiling which makes the audience engaged)
-Graphics and colour: Masthead is black, use of colour purple which reflects liberal beliefs of the
newspaper, yellow on specific words which reveals happiness and makes it stand out more 
-Does the media language present a point of view and has it been constructed/mediated? The image 
may of been mediated to show power and equality (they cropped the image) as it links with the story.

How do the stories reflect the contexts of the 21st century?
Identify one story from the contemporary covers that reflects Britain as a multicultural society.
J= reflects Black Panther M= different ethnicities getting married

J= me too all about women and dominance  M= Women from different ethnicities gets married to the 
prince who is white. Female journalist are more common these days.

What stories are present?
me too campaign which reflects the liberal values of the guardian in which they believe women are entitled to the same opportunities as men.
What issues are present?
The normality of sexual assault between woman, and the guardian aim to raise awareness for this showing full support and encouragement for the movement.
Who is present? Who is absent?
Strong powerful image on the front of a woman, which represents independence and equality, lack of male dominance suggests womens unreliance on men and their survival without them.
How have they been represented?
Nigella lawson in the sky box has been re[resented as a stereotypical woman, with her pictured being in the kitchen, although her job takes on a more traditional women role- this feature on the magazine ay contradict the campaigning of women fighter for equality and power in todays society and proving that they are more than just housewives.
How has language and the images been used? What meaning is created?
The strong image on the front creates a powerful sense of strength and determination which is highly associated with the campaign. This sense of overcoming leaves women in a powerful position to move on from sexual assault and prevent it for other women.
How does this link to contexts of the time?
Nigella Lawson in the kitchen represents women from an old stereotype, acting as the homemakers. However main image represents them as powerful and dominant linking o more modern contextual ideas of women.

How does it support the Scott Trust values?
It reflects the journalistic freedom and liberal values of the Guardian free from commercial or political interference. As not everyone would agree that women are equal to en but this new liberal article is presented in their magazine.
