NEWSPAPER INDUSTRY ISSUES







Using The Guardian / Observer as a central focus, you will be carrying out an investigation into the following issues the newspaper industry currently faces:

-What are online newspaper paywalls?
A paywall is a method of restricting access to content via a paid subscription and they are effective as the newspaper company will get their money by having people pay to see their content.


-How are newspapers currently funded? 
By subscriptions and advertising.

-What are the roles of the IPSO and IMPRESS (independent press regulator)? Why do they exist? When have they been important?
They are regulators, many newspapers would use them just to make sure they don't get in any legal trouble after the Leveson Inquiry.

-Why is the circulation and advertising revenue of newspapers declining?
People have social media to find out information and for the latest news.

-How far can online newspapers reach in terms of audience?
Website, Social media accounts(instagram, twitter, Facebook) app.

-What are the difficulties in regulating an international online newspaper?
Different laws are in place in different counties thus they have to be wary of things that may not be accepted internationally.

Does anything come as a surprise?
The majority of Conservative votes come from the Telegraph.
The majority of Labour votes comes from the Guardian.
The smallest of Conservative votes comes from the Guardian.
The least Labour votes come from the Telegraph.

-Can you link it to what you’ve learned about  newspapers so far?
Newspapers show their political views by the way they address certain situation so a passive audience would accept that message and believe everything the newspaper was saying yet an active audience would have their own view instead of accepting what the newspaper was saying.


















-What does the graph show?
What social grade the newspapers readers are.

-Write down 4 statements about the graph. Include one statement which starts ‘OVERALL’ Does anything come as a surprise?
The Guardian has a majority of ABC1 audience.
The Daily Star ha a majority of C2DE audience.
The Daily Mail, Metro and Daily Express have around the same amount of readerships, most ABC1 but C2DE are nearly catching up.


-Can you link it to what you’ve learned about newspapers so far? 
Newspapers can use specific language and be led by different things all based on their audience as the ABC1 audience would be use to mire formal language and text based, this can bring up the price of the newspaper, whereas the C2DE audience would be used to colloquial language and more image led so the newspaper wouldn't be as expensive.
